Yuko Shimizu
Yuko Shimizu is a Japanese illustrator based in New York whose work moves between editorial images, book covers, picture books and larger commissions. She completed the Illustration as Visual Essay MFA at the School of Visual Arts in 2003 after an earlier career in corporate public relations. Her portfolio makes the variety of commissioned drawing especially clear: publications, posters and book projects appear with their individual contexts rather than as an anonymous stream of images. The work archive includes The Cat Man of Aleppo and Japanese Tales, alongside editorial assignments. Studying those different formats offers a way to compare how a drawing can establish a story, condense an argument or set a book's atmosphere. Her published Japanese name, 清水裕子, also helps distinguish the illustrator from other creators with the same romanized name.
