Hebru Brantley

Hebru Brantley develops narrative worlds through painting, sculpture and immersive environments. Flyboy, a recurring figure inspired by the Tuskegee Airmen, belongs to his broader interest in reimagining the heroes of American popular culture as people of color. The Negro Mythos series gives that project an explicit narrative frame. His work also extends beyond the canvas: a 2019 installation in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood brought Flyboy and Lil Mama into an environment visitors could enter.
